Abundance

I've been so blessed with abundance that I have not had time to write. Or hardly breathe. This has been an amazing, incredible year! Every day is a blessing. Every. Single. One.

Will try to get back to writing soon! :)

"They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness."  Psalm 145:7

Happy Birthday

For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.
1 Samuel 1:27

Today is my eldest's birthday! Seventeen, to be exact. I do not know how that's possible...seems like yesterday we were rushing to the hospital (I had a 2 hour labor. Don't hate me :) Time has flown.

I will never take motherhood for granted. It took three years and as many doctors to get me there. It was a heartwrenching journey of many tests and eventually surgery to fix what was standing in the way.

And I will never forget how utterly overwhelmed with love I was when he got here...and the feeling I had when I realized that as endless and deep my love for him was (and is!), that God loves me even more than that...I'm His child.

Happy Birthday! Being your mom is the best gift I've ever had. ♡

By the Sea

If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,  even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.   Psalm 139:9-10

We had a beautiful time at the beach. We fished (I caught a 4' shark!!), went crabbing, went swimming, went "junking" (and I found a cool antique iron, a red dish, and a lime green vase)...we ate lots of seafood, and there were several loud rounds of Pit played. A good time was had by all.

Today was back to the normal routine. I'm grateful for safe travels and the time by the sea...and I'm equally so to be home again.

Covenant

I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.   Genesis 9:13

This was the view I had today....

A glorious reminder of the covenant, of His grace and mercy, always with us.

Amen and amen.

Hands

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.
Proverbs 31:13

The hands are willing...and I'm still learning! On my bucket list is learning to knit, and so far I have learned how to make socks, a basic shawl, and I'm working on my first sweater.  Its fun!

Today I continued on my third pair of socks, grateful for the time off from my regular work to enjoy knitting with abandon.

:)

A Gorgeous Day

Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.
Psalm 74:16

It was a gorgeous day.

Its nearing the end of July, a time when the sun usually blares and the humidity nearly drowns. But today was unseasonably comfortable!  A little sun, a little rain late day, and as I write this I'm sitting on a porch, rocking, soaking  up the stillness in a cool, gentle breeze.

Life is good.

Looking Up

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Psalm 19:1

About a year ago we went to Phoenix for the boys' spring break. It was the first time I had been that far west and I was amazed at the expanse of sky that was there! I grew up the the mountains, in a wooded neighborhood, and I live in a wooded neighborhood now. I'm just used to being nestled among the trees, and they offer their own kind of beauty and comfort. I wouldn't want it any other way.

But, I also love being in the expanse of vastly open sky, and today I found myself in a place where you can see forever in every direction.  It was beautiful and in that expanse where I felt rather small, I was reminded of just how big God's creation is...and how far reaching His arms.

Its good to be out of the forest, looking up.

July 18, 2014

Rest

for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:10

As much as I love my work, what was good about today was that I got enough done to take a few days off to rest! My projects are in good order, I got caught up on sending out invoices,  and now it's time for a few relaxing days ahead. I'm looking forward to spending time with my guys! Im grateful for time to rest.

Fulfillment

May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans!
Psalm 20:4

Indeed. He does.

Play Ball!

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31

Today the eldest played baseball, the first time since the accident. It was just a scrimmage, but still, a game. You know, with fast balls flying by his face.

I didn't faint.

That was God's strength at work, not mine. I'm not entirely sure I had any of my own.

His grace is everywhere...even in the folding chair behind home plate.

July 15, 2014

Thankful

The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
Psalm 118:14

I've been running wide open this week...really, for many weeks! I am blessed with lots of wonderful clients and plenty of work to do, and I give God the glory for that and giving me the strength to go the extra mile. After the slow years during the economic downturn, having a steady flow of projects is something for which I am very thankful.

God provides. He is my strength, my song,  and my salvation.

July 14, 2014

Midnight

At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules.
Psalm 119:62

Well, it's almost midnight.

Its been another long day. Yet, even at this late hour I will rise to praise Him, before I rest my head, because He is the giver and sustainer of everything.

July 13, 2014

Sowing

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
2 Corinthians 9:6

This year I planted the garden with a prayer and an expectation for a bountiful harvest, and I have not been disappointed! Today alone we picked 17 cucumbers, squash, greenbeans, tomatoes, okra and more. All this from a little side yard kitchen garden!

If you sow bountifully,  you'll reap bountifully.  That's true in the garden, and it's true in life.

Today I spent some time on a project that will sow into life. Its a special gift that will be quietly given to someone whose needs are tremendous right now. I'm happy to be able to do something to help.

Opportunities to sow into life are all around...finding them and doing something is a blessing.

Sow bountifully...

Home

So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
2 Corinthians 5:9

It was a quick but fun trip to my childhood home, and the time away, though brief, was refreshing. Tonight I'm back at home with my boys, glad for a weekend day still ahead to rest up before the work week begins.

Two "homes" in two days...and both are where my heart is. ♡

July 11, 2014

To the Hills!

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?   My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2

Today I took a trip up the mountain to my hometown. It was perfect timing - I needed to go meet with someone about an art commission,  I've been long past due a visit to my aunts, and there was a regional quilt show going on. It all made for a busy, fun day!

Being a poor keeper of linear time, I had to think hard to realize it's been over 2 years since I came up to visit my aunts! Life gets busy...I'm just glad everything worked out for making the trip this weekend.

The meeting went well, the quilt show was lovely, and the time spent with family is priceless. The drive up and now through the mountains was so beautiful. I forgot how encompassing being surrounded by the Blue Ridge feels. It was like being nestled down into a place of great comfort...like home.

July 10, 2014

Good

You have been good to me, Lord, and I will sing about you.  Psalms 13:6

We had surgery follow up visit #2 today. Its been one day short of two weeks since his surgery,  and if you looked at him and didn't know what had happened,  you would not know anything had happened.  It really is amazing to me!

He will go back in 4 months just to check things out,  but meanwhile he can go back to playing ball. He wilk have to wear a protective face guard at bat, but summer can get back on track.

God is so good!!

July 09, 2014

Follow

You bless all those who follow your commands from deep in their hearts.
Psalms 119:2

It's been a long, good day and as I write this I'm still working. Deadlines...a good thing because that means I have plenty to do and for that I will always be grateful. God does indeed provide!

Keeping me company is the radio, and in particular this song

M.youtube.com/watch?v=1ohvhmGSfxI

Love it

Kindness

When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.
Matthew 6:3-4. (The Message)

That's what was good about today. I got to help someone. And someone else got to help me.

No fanfare. Just people being kind, doing something to make life better for someone else. Paying it forward.

Doesn't that make every day good?

:)

Oh Deer!

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
Psalm 42:1

Tonight we once again took the boat out to fish, the eldest and I.  I love being out there...it's so peaceful.  We hadn't been out long when we saw a deer in a clearing near the water's edge. It was alone...not skittish, just slowly making its way. Of course I thought of this verse. And the music written around it. God sends us all kinds of reminders of Himself...eyes to see. Made the time on the lake even more peaceful.

We stayed until dark. I caught 3.75* plus a stick.  :) He caught 10. He's the fish whisperer.

We had a blast. ♡

(* 3.75 = 3 in the boat, one almost in the boat which counts as .5, and .25 for one of the biggest hits ever)

Making Plans

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.  Proverbs 16:9

I spent some time today planning something that, Lord willing, I will get to do later this week. It's something I haven't done in over two years, but if I get to it will be fun!

Making plans made it a good day today. :)

July 05, 2014

Peace Filled Day

The Lord gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace.  Psalm 29:11

After a few weeks of lots of pressure and stress, the last two days of rest have restored me immensely.  The garden has been tended to by the eldest, who is feeling back to himself after his surgery. The house is pretty clean thanks mostly to my husband. Some of the cooking has been done by the youngest.

All I've done mostly is knit! And rest.

To not have an agenda, to have my son feeling so much better, to lay down the work deadlines, and just BE is such a blessing!! After all, we are human beings, not human doings. Sometimes you just have to clear the calendar.

Its only a long weekend, but I feel like I've had a week long vacation. I've been strengthened and blessed with peace.

July 04, 2014

Freedom

you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.  John 8:32

As we celebrate Independence Day, 4th of July, I think  about what really makes us all free.

Freedom indeed came at a price...on a hill...on a cross.

July 03, 2014

Laughter

On your feet now—applaud God ! Bring a gift of laughter, sing yourselves into his presence.  Psalm 100:1-2 MSG

My friend Jean Smith has been working on a 100 piece art series she named "Laughter Project". I don't remember exactly when she started it, but it's been at least a year long journey. She is incredibly talented and dedicated!

Today she posted a video compilation, having recently completed the 100th piece. It was one of the first things I saw this morning and it made my day, right from the start.

You can see it here:

It will make your day good too!

July 02, 2014

Focus

But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. Psalm 71:14

Isn't that a beautiful verse?

No matter what is going on around me, with this as a foundation joy will be ever present.

Its all about where your focus is. And mine is on Him.

July 01, 2014

Help

My help comes from the Lord , who made heaven and earth.  Psalm 121:2

And today help came through His servant George who showed up at my door with 2 chicken pies and a carton of icecream.  I've hit the wall of exhaustion today...not having to figure out or fix dinner tonight is truly God sent!

God's timing is perfect once again. :)

And once again I am grateful.

Blessed

Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.    Deuteronomy 28:6

Today I felt especially so. My son is healing, we are being showered with love and support from so many people. It's truly uplifting and humbling.

Despite being way behind on work I'm catching up, and I had a presentation today that went really well. I especially like this client - they are kind and fun to work with. The project is going to turn out well.

It was a good day all around. And I feel blessed.   ♡

June 29, 2014

Love

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.  Galatians 6:2

As you can imagine my hands have been quite full since my son's surgery Friday. I missed writing a post yesterday...there just wasn't time. It would be an overwhelming situation if not for God's grace...

...and the support of so many wonderful friends, family, and teammates!

The prayers, calls, emails,  FB messages,  visits, food...it's just been wonderful. We are grateful to be surrounded by so much love and support as our son goes through this time of healing.

June 27, 2014

Praise

Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness!  Psalm 150:2

Surgery is done! It took a little over 3 hours of actual procedure time - much more than they had thought but the doctor is pleased with the results. Now comes healing time.

Praise God for His mercy!

June 26, 2014

Distraction Day

Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus. In conclusion, my friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable.
Philippians 4:6-8

Tomorrow is surgery day. And I'm amazingly at peace about it. That's how Grace works.

He went with me on a design appointment this morning, then we hit the road towards Charlotte to go to the Bass Pro Shop. It was the perfect way to distract ourselves on the day before.  We made a day of it...lunch, a couple of hours looking at everything in the store, some restocking of baits...it was a really good day.

We spent the evening on the lake trying out the new lures until the sun went down. They worked. :)

Morning will come early. Time for rest...tomorrow's a big day.

Sleep

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord , make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

This evening I had a long, deep sleep nap on the couch.

It was awesome!!

It was a full, busy day. The nap was most needed. And my eyes are closing as I write this....

I'm grateful to sleep in peace.  :)

June 24, 2014

Calm

And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:24-26

It was a stormy day.

We had appointments with the facial plastic surgeon and the oral surgeon, both of which got changed from their original times. Schedule shuffle stress. Once at the ENT we had to wait over an hour past the changed time because they had an emergency surgery. Not that big of a deal for us, by then I had already given myself the day off, but it added to the anxiety of not knowing.

When we finally got back we were given news we had not expected...he IS going to need reconstructive surgery. Now. This week.

Once we got to the car there were tears. though we both kept it to a minimum. I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry until I was dehydrated. But I had to stay strong for his sake.

We had to go all the way back home to get his x-rays for the oral surgeon appointment...I knew I was forgetting something this morning!  To add to the summer fun he was already on deck for getting his wisdom teeth out. That doctor confirmed what we had heard at the ENT, and we were able to put off the wisdom teeth surgery until August, the week before school starts.

By then my head was spinning.

So, tonight, he and I got the boat out on the lake to fish and take our minds off the coming days. The sky had big billowy clouds and a not too hot sun which made the water shine like a mirror. As we worked our way around the edges, my mind still numb from the news, I stared at the reflection of the clouds and trees in the water and I was filled with an incredible peace. I heard an inner voice reminding me that what seemed upside down, towering in the murky darkness of the pond was only a reflection...that what was real was standing strong on the shore. And in the reflection of the clouds I was reminded that heaven isn't just "up there"...it's down here with us too.

Just then one of my favorite bugs landed on my fishing rod and in its beautiful iridescent wings I was reminded once again that the dragon is only a fly.

Peace be still. Sometimes He calms the storm...other times He calms His child.

Summer Camp

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.   Proverbs 22:6

It's summer camp week for the youngest, and he has been so excited about going! He and his best bud are there together for a week of fun in the sun, adventures, and worship.

He went last year for the first time. It was a blast...until a horrible stomach virus swept through the camp. We had to pick him up that Thursday night, and by Friday noon the camp had to close. It was just one of those things. But he was so disappointed...he had such a great time and he was about to be ping pong champion of the week. :)

I dropped him off this morning. This time promises to be better, and he is ready to challenge his almost-title again. It will be a blast for him! I'm excited for him and happy he will be learning as he plays.

I pray it will be a week of memories and knowledge that will last a lifetime.

Moving On

and (Jesus) ordered them, “Don't take anything with you on your journey except a stick — no bread, no beggar's bag, no money in your pockets.  Wear sandals, but don't carry an extra shirt.”  He also said, “Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that place.   Mark 6:8-10

It's that time of year when the Methodist church has its annual conference, and a time when many pastors have been packing to move. I didn't grow up in the Methodist church, so this is one tradition that I haven't really gotten used to.

Our pastor is one of those being moved. He and his wife knew there would be one more move in their ministry before retirement, but they weren't really expecting it to be this year. So it's hard. Hard for them, hard for a congregation that has been led for 7 years by them. And they are also our neighbors, three doors up.

Every time there is a pastoral move I think about this scripture.  Jesus sent the disciples out into the world to minister and share the Good News. They were to travel lightly, staying where they were received until it was time to move on.

Next Sunday will be their last Sunday with us. So today, what was good was not the fact that they are leaving, but the fact that they were here.

God speed and blessings to them and all those who are moving on.

Celebration

Show respect to the aged; honor the presence of an elder  Leviticus 19:32a

Today we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday. All of my husband's siblings but one (who lives far away) were able to attend. We all met up at a restaurant for dinner and then went back to their house for cake and gifts. And stories of course. You don't live in a house with four children without gathering tales of their adventures!

That she has made it to 80 might just be a miracle.

It was a nice celebration and she loved her quilt! I managed to get the last stitch in 45 minutes before dinner. (That too was a miracle!)

June 20, 2014

Timing

Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

I've been working on a special birthday present this week, and discovered late today I needed extra material to complete it. And of course I have to have it finished tomorrow! It is a scrappy quilt, and I was trying to use what I had on hand but was about a yard short for the backing. Its a very soft, old-fashioned color scheme, not my usual bold and bright. So, I headed to the quilt shop near my house, 30 minutes before closing time, and once there went straight to the sale rack to see what I could find.

A two second glance found the PERFECT fabric! Not just a "make do" but perfect. On sale at almost half price!!

I scooped it up and headed for the cutting counter to get what I needed. While the lady was measuring it out to cut and we were gushing about how perfect it was, one of her coworkers walked up and said, "isn't that one of the ones we just put back there today?"

Lord, thank you!! I needed that hug from You today. Your timing is perfect.  :)

June 19, 2014

Wait

Trust in the Lord . Have faith, do not despair. Trust in the Lord .  Psalms 27:14

It will be a few more days before we know if my son will need surgery or not. The doctor wants to reevaluate once more swelling has gone down. I saw the CT scans today and there is more than one break. Still, it could have been much worse. I'm so thankful that it wasn't.

And now we wait.

And I will repeat this scripture whenever fear tries to trip me up. I know God is bigger than this bump in the road.

Child's Play

Children are a gift from the Lord ; they are a real blessing.  Psalms 127:3

Today I started a new design project. It is a children's theater whose business is thriving and they have the opportunity to expand into adjacent spaces. So off I went to measure the building to draw up plans for them to get a building permit.

Part of what I had to document is their existing space...and it is such a fun place!! There was one large class of children, I'm guessing ages 5-8, who were learning songs for a musical and they were so sweet I had to stop and just soak it in. Across the hall acting lessons were in progress and I was running improv lines through my head, writing myself into the scene as I tiptoed across and behind the set to measure the room. Then there was the room full of little costumes...dress up dream land!

I can easily see why they are successful!

What a gift it was to be surrounded by the joyous exuberance of all those children. The songs are still running through my mind and making me smile.

Promises

I trust in God and am not afraid; I praise him for what he has promised.
Psalms 56:4

Amen.

June 16, 2014

Trust

The Lord will help them when they are sick and will restore them to health.
Psalms 41:3

After the half night in the out-of-town ER last night, we made it home today. Follow up appointments have been made, prescriptions filled and picked up, insurance company called. Now we can rest and my son can start the process of healing. There won't be any baseball for a few weeks. A definite diversion of summer plans.

But it could have been worse than it is. Way worse.

We will trust in God's plan for this.  He is healer...

Strength

I have confidence in your strength; you are my refuge, O God.   Psalms 59:9

It was Father's Day today. We has an out of town baseball tournament this weekend. We were able to spend the night at my husband's brother's house. All the guys got to go fishing this morning before heading out for games 3 and 4, an hour away.

It should have been a perfect day.

Instead, my son took a fast ball to the face when he was at bat, and we had to drive an hour to the hospital, where we spent another 4 hours being evaluated.

Some days you have to look harder for what was good.

I'm thankful Uncle Bob was with us at the field. He used to be a sports trainer for NC State, so he was able to evaluate my son immediately. I'm thankful that we didn't have any travel issues other than distance to get to the hospital. I'm thankful the ER wasn't over run and was able to get us back quickly.

And I'm thankful for a God who gives me strength...

Birds

Look at the birds: they do not sow seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren't you worth much more than birds?
Matthew 6:26

Matthew 6 is one of my very favorites, and this passage always comes to mind when I hear this...I stumbled on this version via a Facebook post:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzh1tJBY5Ks

Such an amazing young voice! And what beautiful words...

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free...His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Indeed.

Spa Day

The regular beauty treatment for the women lasted a year —   Esther 2:12a

Well, mine only lasted 2 hours, but it was still awesome! Today I ended work early enough to go get a mani-pedi.  That's not a big deal to a lot of women,  they do that all the time.  But I seem to only manage that little luxury, oh, every 2-3 years...or more. I'm hard on my hands. Between artwork, sewing, gardening, housework, measuring buildings...you get the idea. Let's face it, I'm not a high maintenance gal. And I've never been good at justifying the cost of something  I'm likely to mess up within the first 2 hours of having it done.

But, today seemed like a good day to splurge a little. And it was nice! I saw two good friends from church there and sat beside someone I hadn't seen in ages, a furniture rep from my early days in design. There was that brief moment of 'I know I know you but from where' and it was fun to finally make the connection.

It was nice to be pampered,  and so far I haven't chipped a thing! I'm ready for the weekend, all prettied up. :)

Becoming Wise

Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do. Whatever else you get, get insight.   Proverbs 4:7

Today my youngest celebrated 8th grade graduation, a year end tradition that signifies moving on to high school.

High school! My "baby" will be starting high school in the fall! How did that get here so fast???

It's a mixed bag... seeing him becoming such an awesome young man fills my heart with happiness yet it's tinged with a little heart sting knowing that before I blink the nest will be emptying. Time is both a healer and a thief, and it seems to rush no matter how much we want it to slow down.

Still, the day was a joy! He was recognized for making Honor Roll all year. We had a special lunch after the ceremony with friends. And tomorrow summer break begins!

He is growing up...becoming wiser every day. He is a blessing to me.

That I know. ♡

Mercy

The Lord is merciful and good; our God is compassionate.   Psalms 116:5

This is so beautiful...

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z03ttN7CF0I

And especially so seeing him live, in an arena of several thousand singing along in worship together. Wow.....That is a memory that will always fill me up.

That wasn't today, it was several many weeks back. But it crossed my mind today and made me smile.

Mercy...as endless as the sea...

June 10, 2014

Happy

Smiling faces make you happy, and good news makes you feel better.  Proverbs 15:30

Isn't that the truth?

As we get closer to the end of another school year, I'm seeing lots of smiling teenage faces. As I went about today I saw lots more smiling faces...the friend I met for coffee this morning, the lady at our local Chinese takeout restaurant (she is awesome!), the customer I met with, my husband as he came in the door after work, myself in the mirror.

Smiling faces are the best!!!

Its great to see one...and its great to be one! And here's the best part:

It's contagious.

:)

Lunch Date

I asked him for this child, and he gave me what I asked for.   1 Samuel 1:27

And today I got to have a lunch date with one of them. :)

It's exam week again, and as things are winding down the students are allowed to leave early if they don't have an exam or review class. So, I scooped up my eldest and off we went to a Mexican restaurant nearby the school. We had a great time!

I love my kids...they're what's good about every day. ♡

Unexpected Rain

He sends rain on the land and he waters the fields.    Job 5:10

Even baseball fields.

The last game of this weekend's tournament was played in the rain...for a while at least. It started out without rain, but cloudy. By the time we hit the second inning it was a steady downpour.

I didn't mind. I got to snuggle up to my sweetie under the big golf umbrella!

We still got wet! Water was dripping through the umbrella and running down the bleacher seats. It got kind of funny after a while.

They didn't call the game until the pitcher's mound started getting slick, a couple of innings later. Everyone on the field was drenched! And a few were quite muddy. Someone will have some fun laundry to do. :) Boys...they just don't know when to come out of the rain!

But you know what? I think every once in a while everyone should play in the rain, and not just baseball. Remember splashing in puddles when you were a child? Fun!! Some things you never outgrow.

Unexpected rain only "messes up your day" if you let it...

Home

Lord , you make the path smooth for good people; the road they travel is level.
Isaiah 26:7

And after three weeks away on business, the way home was smooth for my husband. He took the red-eye home last night from Phoenix and made it just in time this morning to be scooped up from the airport and whisked away to game one of our eldest's travel baseball season opening tournament. A long journey for sure.

The two games played today were wins!

I'm just glad to have him home agajn. :)

Wings

because you have always been my help. In the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
Psalms 63:7

As I was heading out for a meeting today I drove past the pond next door, and there were three geese couples standing on the bank. With them, all totalled, we're ten babies! Ten! I've never seen that many together at that pond. They were so cute!! It was as if they had gathered for a play date.

I pulled up and stopped beside them. Usually they would hiss and carry on - they can be very defensive and protective. But they just looked up at me, almost looking proud,  as if to say "aren't they something?"

 They were...they were beautiful.  :)

Anniversary

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.  Genesis 2:24

Today was an extra special day - our 21st wedding anniversary!

I am blessed beyond my greatest imaginings.  ♡

Grace

May mercy, peace, and love be yours in full measure.  Jude 1:2

It was a day full of that. It's what comes when you learn to be content regardless, when happiness becomes a conscious choice, and when thankfulness is in everything, even the parts that aren't necessarily easy.

God's grace...it truly is amazing.

Fullness

Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another.
John 1:16

It was a full, busy day. First thing, before the sun was up, I fixed a special breakfast for my youngest - it's exam week and I just love doing that little bit of extra to get the day started right. So far this week the eldest hasn't wanted anything out of the ordinary for breakfast, but tomorrow is his Algebra II exam...we'll see. :)

Next was a coffee shop get together with four of my girlfriends to celebrate the birthday of one of them. It was nice to hang out with them and the coffee was really good. And yes, I had some chocolate to go with it...yum! I could have stayed there all morning.

But, it was off to a meeting for an hour, then back to my desk to continue drawing up floor plans of the building I've been measuring. Turned out I needed to recheck a couple of spots, so off I went again. And a good thing it was...while I was there the building manager asked me for a proposal to do additional work!

This evening was spent hanging out with the boys...a nice dinner, some time in the garden (first banana pepper picked!), and some time spent knitting on my sweater project.

Another ordinary day...and one full of one blessing after another.

God is good!

Garden

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.
Genesis 8:22

Today the first greens were picked. Not a lot, as the season is still young and the plants are still growing. But I wanted to make a green smoothie for breakfast so I walked out to the garden to see what I could find. It was so pretty this morning...the grass was wet with dew, birds were chirping, and the sun was just climbing over the trees.

I picked some kale,  leaf lettuce,  and pinched the leaves off of some celery. Just a handful all together but just enough to blend in with peaches and blueberries.  I had a yummy breakfast!

Having a cottage garden is so rewarding. There is nothing better than just picked, fresh from the garden produce! I can't wait until everything really starts coming in.

Seeds sown with an expectation of harvest...nature's reminder of God's faithful provision.

Feasting with Friends

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.  Psalm 128:2

Today was the day for a great feast with friends! Eight families plus some friends and co-workers gathered for a potluck picnic at one of our town's parks. The weather could not have been better...partly cloudy Carolina blue sky and warm temperatures made for a perfect afternoon. There were several rounds of volleyball and basketball and horseshoes played, kids and adults. We had a great meal, including a broccoli salad competition (between two of the guys - it was quite entertaining!) and a birthday cake!

The cool thing about this gathering is that we've been doing it for many years! Dubbed "Grub Club", we've shared many good times and meals together, and watched our children grow from toddlers to teenagers. In the early days we got together once a month, rotating hosts. As all the kids have gotten older and into lots of activities our gatherings have become less frequent, but just as meaningful.

It is a true blessing to be surrounded by such good friends, to share a history with them, and to watch the kids form lifelong friendships as well. They say friends are the family you choose, and that it certainly true of this group.

I'm already looking forward to the next gathering of good food shared among good friends!

Fragrant

But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers.    Matthew 6:29

Where I live there is one thing that says Southern and that is the Magnolia tree. We have a huge one in our side yard, actually it is several clustered together, and its peak is about, oh I don't know, 50 feet in the air. Maybe more. It is majestic. And it is blooming.

Today I sent my youngest out the door with a pair of scissors on a quest to find a single blossom to bring in. He found the perfect one and it now graces the center of my kitchen table. Its scent is heavenly!

While I was at it I decided to bring in some Nandina blossoms, just enough to fill a small vase in the foyer. They are so pretty!

It's the little, simple things...... :)

Ordinary

He made some days holy and important, and made other days ordinary.
Sirach 33:9

Today was decidedly ordinary. I decided to take the day off, there were things at home that needed my attention and I needed also to rest up from the week. I've pushed hard this week and I'll pick up tomorrow where I left off.

Tonight brought us a good steady rain, much needed. I love to listen to it falling through the trees...it's so peaceful.

It was good to have a simple, ordinary day today.

Press On

Run your best in the race of faith, and win eternal life for yourself; for it was to this life that God called you when you firmly professed your faith before many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12

It was another good day. I finished measuring the office building I have been working on, which has been a large undertaking. It has been quite tiring being on my feet on hard floors for hours on end as I've worked to detail what is a somewhat complicated building... but it has been such a great blessing to have a project of this size to do!

As I was pulling out of the parking lot this song came on the radio:

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=yQsRKCH59qw

I just love it!

Lots more to do to get it all drawn up...I press on. :)

Measuring

He took the measuring rod and measured the east side, and it was 840 feet. Then he measured the north side, the south side, and the west side; each side had the same length, 840 feet,   Ezekiel 42:16-17

Yesterday was a 19 hour day that started at 4:00 AM and I realized this morning that I didn't get a post done! Oops! Even though it was a loonnng day it was a good one.

Today I continued measuring a large multi-tenant office building to be able to draw as-built plans for the building owner. It is an historic building that was once home to tobacco manufacturing, and when it was renovated to become office space they kept the exposed high ceilings, glass block windows, and other original details. It's really cool space and I love the feeling of connection to history.

While there are parts where I still use a good old fashioned tape measure, mostly I use a laser tape to determine distances. It makes it go a lot faster and I'm able to measure everything by myself. I was interested to find this Scripture...imagine having to measure a large building with a rod! And yet, they were able to build the temple with all of its intricate details. God inspires every generation.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to document this building. And I'm thankful for the modern tools to get it done.

Rest

And Jesus concluded, “The Sabbath was made for the good of human beings; they were not made for the Sabbath.   Mark 2:27

After several days of hard labor in the yard, today was a true day of rest. We had a family church time at home this morning...no rushing to get dressed and out the door today. We spent time at the in-laws having a mini family reunion with all of my husband's siblings (from out of town and state) for lunch and most of the afternoon. We put the boats in the lake and fished, and then met friends for dinner out.

Admittedly I am not good at stopping. I'm pretty driven and with two teenagers, two dogs, a busy consulting business, and a traveling husband my cup is always full to overflowing. But I'm learning to make deliberate time for rest. It is God's plan for our benefit.

And it's great... :)

Cleaning Complete!

The pressure washing is finished! It took about six hours today to finish it up. All the while this song kept coming into my mind:

http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=OOjpkqrCEOU

May 23, 2014

Washed

Remove my sin, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.  Psalm 51:7

I've been on a mission to clean up the yard. Beds have been edged, weeds removed, and for two evenings I've been pressure washing the front porch, sidewalk, and steps to the driveway. We had the sidewalk replaced seven years ago and I'm not sure it's been washed since. Maybe once? But for sure and certain it was gross, the steps had moss and all kinds of weeds and junk growing on them, and the front porch had enough dead plants on it to look like we had moved. Yuk!!

But now? It looks brand new!

Little by little the dark, dingy sidewalk revealed a clean, bright white. And the further I went along the dirtier I got from the spray. There was some grime being flung and by the time I was done I was covered in yuk from head to toe!

All the while I was cleaning I thought about how God through Christ washes us clean. About how He took our "yuk" upon Himself so that we could be clean and made like  new. How that Grace powers through the deepest layers to remove the yuk to the point that it's like it was never there in the first place.

Just the way I felt after showering and watching it all go down the drain.

Blessed...washed...

Learn

Pay attention to your teacher and learn all you can.  Proverbs 23:12

Thursday is knitting class day! I'm a newbie...so far I've made scarves, simple hats, socks, and now I'm diving into my first sweater. Both of the classes I've taken have had great teachers and its a whole lot of fun learning something new! The sweater is only about 3.5" off the needles so far...it will take some time to complete, but in the process there will be a lot to learn which will carry forward into future projects.

Learning how to knit has been on my bucket list for a while. I'm happy to have patient teachers who can show me how to do it!

Now to find a spinning teacher... (eventually...)

:)

Wages

"Name your wages, and I will pay them.”  Genesis 30:28

Today was invoicing day. I can't begin to express my gratitude for the work I have had lately. It is truly a blessing to me and my family.

Thanks be to God!

Do Good

So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone,
Galatians 6:10 a

And today I had a chance. Someone had a real need that, with the help of some good friends in construction world, was able to be met at no cost to him. His home will be much safer now and I'm glad I was able to help make that happen.

They say you can't help everyone, but you can help someone.

If everyone would help someone, then I suppose everyone could be helped.

Something to think about...

May 17, 2014

Friends

Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody.
Romans 12:18

I met my friend early this morning at Krispy Kreme to deliver the stoles I made yesterday...of course that meant a doughnut and coffee was on the agenda in addition to spending some time together! After that I made a quick stop at a quilt shop for a fabric refill and enjoyed catching up with the folks there. Then I ended up meeting another friend to get some items being donated to help someone I know and had a good visit with her.

Later we had a good visit with my husband's parents and finished off the day catching up with some neighbors.

Saturdays are perfect for slowing down the pace of life and spending time with friends. It was so nice to see everybody!

It was a peaceful day.

May 16, 2014

Creative

For all things were created by him, and all things exist through him and for him. To God be the glory forever! Amen.  Romans 11:36

Today was spent creating clergy stoles for C and M Designs. For me that time is an act of worship and given that it was an all day event, it made for a great day! I completed three...I'm hoping that whoever receives them is as blessed as I was in creating them.

It's been a long and very good, creative day.

May 15, 2014

Home

Anyone away from home is like a bird away from its nest.  Proverbs 27:8

My husband has to make frequent business trips. What was good about today is that my traveling husband came home.

Change in Plans

Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning.
James 1:17

Things don't always go the way that you plan.

Today was supposed to be a "desk day." Time in the office to get specs done on one project, a proposal done on another, selections made for another. But a client asked if I could bring some prints of their building over "like nowish." As in drop everything and drive into town. Ugh.

So I did.

I was able to get enough done before I left not to be behind when I got back. And I figured while I was out I'd tackle a few errands. I grabbed a plan from another project, some couch cushion covers to take to the cleaners, a list for the store, and off I went.

I got to town just a bit ahead of my time for dropping off the prints so I popped over to the arts district to see an exhibit I've been wanting to see. But the gallery was not open! Drat. Another plan diverted. I went into the shop next door to fill the time and ended up finding the cutest salt and pepper shaker set...which I wouldn't have done had my plan not been redirected. Simple gift, yes, but one that makes me smile.

After my client meeting I took the couch cushion covers to the dry cleaners. Turns out that they are washable and don't have to be drycleaned. Finding that out was a nice gift!

Then I hopped across the street to the knit shop to see if they could help me with the socks I had almost finished (well, sock. The first of the pair). The lady who had taught the class I took was in and she graciously sat down with me and was able to jog my memory. One sock is now completed! Learning to knit is a gift...I like new challenges.

On my way home I was able to swing by another client to review a new layout for a space they are considering, and then I hit the store with my list getting that task done.

Not at all the day I had planned, but so many nice things happened!

Our plans may change, but God never does. And how wonderful are the gifts He gives, even when, and today delightfully because, plans get changed!

May 13, 2014

Ordinary

Give us each day our daily bread.  Luke 11:3

Today was decidedly ordinary. After a day out yesterday "making rounds" today was a desk day. Much needed, I have a lot to do. Most of the day was spent writing specs for one of my projects. It was good to get it to that part of the process. I'm excited about how it is going to look!

I have a lot to do, but I got a lot done. And I'm trusting Him to give me what I need to get the rest done. Each day to its own, each day's provisions given as are needed.

And thankfulness for it all.

May 12, 2014

Work

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.  Psalm 90:17

I had an important presentation today. It was a redo...the first selections I had brought before my client, a new client, were not the look they were after. That rarely happens...in fact I can't really remember it ever happening. I'm a very intuitive designer, but my idea of pattern and theirs was very different. So I was a bit nervous going in today. I wanted to get it right this time. I prayed for favor the whole way there.

They loved it.

My next meeting went well also. This client is one I've worked with for several years but they have a new property manager and this time around I'm also working with the building owner who is in town. I had never met either, but both are very nice, and they have quite a bit of work for me to do. I am so thankful for that! The economic downturn really hit the construction industry hard and it's so encouraging to see things moving in the right direction.

People have told me they think I'm talented. I don't know about that. I just know I pray a lot. I pray for work to do, and for the work of my hands to be blessed. I pray for direction. So I have to give God the credit. Any gifts I've been given are His.

I just work at being led by Him.

Mother's Day

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
Proverbs 31:28

Without a doubt the best thing that has ever happened to me besides marrying my husband was becoming "Mom" to two of the most amazing boys in the world. If I look back at the last seventeen years the things I remember most and treasure deeply are the times spent together as a family and the times spent watching my babies grow. Nothing is more important.

It has been a wonderful weekend. Breakfast in bed, flowers to plant, a special day at church, lunch out with my guys, cards from all three of them...I truly am blessed.

May 10, 2014

Rain

He provides rain for the earth; he sends water on the countryside.
Job 5:10

What was good about today?

It rained.

It was a typical Southern scattered showers kind of day. First we had relief from the 80+° temps at the soccer game...a nice cloud cover came in and we had a few splatty raindrops. Just enough to cool it off but not enough to get things wet.

Then we got a great rainfall at home, which meant I didn't have to water the garden!  The plants just soaked it up.

I really like spring rains...they cool things down and clear the air, they make things grow and wash things clean.

It rained...and I loved it!

May 09, 2014

Flowers

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Matthew 6:28-29

It's Mother's Day weekend and as we do around here, we started celebrating early tonight. (That's how we roll with reasons to celebrate...birthdays last a week!) We've been doing some things around the yard and the guys decided they wanted to give me a special plant to add to what we've done. I suggested a white knockout rose bush. I had seen some at Lowe's earlier in the week and thought they were pretty.

Since it's Friday night and we always do something together, we all went to Lowe's to pick out a bush. They had a huge lot of knockout roses, but no white ones! I asked, but the guy said there weren't any left. We debated on the pink ones, walked around a bit and debated on the hydrangeas, then wandered back to the roses to pick out a pink one.

And then...my sweet husband saw one lone white one in the middle of all the pink ones! It only had a couple of blossoms open so it was easy to miss. Impressive, especially since it was dark outside when we went.

I can't wait to plant it and watch it grow. Flowers always make me think of this verse in Matthew 6, my favorite chapter. We will put it at the end of the driveway, so whether we're coming or going we will have a beautiful reminder of God's provisions, mercy, and love.

I'm one happy, blessed mom. :)

Catching

For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
Luke 5:9

My sixteen year old son took me fishing tonight. Just the two of us, out floating in the boat with birds chirping and as night began to fall the sounds of tree frogs carried across the water. It was blissful.

And the fish were biting. Catching is always more fun. :)

I caught three and he caught four. Not bad for a little more than an hour on the water. But my biggest catch was that time spent one on one. I'm too keenly aware of how fleeting time is. All too soon he will be off to college and I will wonder where the time went.

For now I will treasure days like today and the time spent catching memories.

I Painted

Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you.   Psalm 86:4

And a joy filled day it was! In spite of the things that tried to trip me up - a child home from school sick, a meeting cancelled, demanding clients, and worst of all two days worth of CAD drawings gone in a crash - it was a day filled with joy!

I painted.

As in artistically. On canvas.

I painted!

It's been a while. And oh did it feel good! My easel is set up in our guest room where my son spent a good bit of the day resting, so it allowed me to hang out with him while I worked.

I like how it turned out. The painting, and the day.

God-incidence

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."  Luke 11:9

I have been asking God to bring Godly women of faith into my life lately and twice now I have been in a crowded gathering with a single empty seat beside me, in a room where I knew no one, and just the right person sat down. The first time was during a multi-day conference, in an arena of literally thousands. That was no coincidence...it was a God-incidence! By the end of the event we had become fast friends and several others had joined the circle as well. All of us were from different places but we have kept in touch.

The second time was today. Smaller gathering, but again just the right person sat down. Turns out we have friends in common and we will be getting together again soon.

A simple prayer on my part...and in the unwritten details an unmistakable answer from above.

God is so good!!

Teaching

Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.   Proverbs 9:9

It was a fairly routine day. Got up, had coffee, went downstairs to work. A lovely day for sure, though nothing out of the ordinary. But late this afternoon two young ladies from my church came over for a sewing lesson. What fun! I've known them since they were little...they were part of the Sunday School class I taught for several years. I still refer to that group as "my kids" so it's especially nice to be teaching sewing to two of "my girls."

They are both super smart and are doing SEW well! I'm having such a good time teaching them. :)

A Day to Shine

This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
Ephesians 5:14

Today was Youth Sunday at church. The entire service was conducted by the youth and they did an amazing job! Everything they did was centered on Ephesians 5:14 and being spiritually awake. They had skits, the youth praise band, liturgical dance, and one of the best youth sermons I've ever heard.

Christ did indeed shine through those kids today!

The day ended with a big cookout/potluck at church to kick off the celebration of Christian Home Month, which we celebrate every May. Turnout was great...it was like a big family reunion. Lots of good food, kids playing frisbee and basketball, lots of good conversation and fellowship, and the weather was beautiful.

It was a great day!

Music

"It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High,"
Psalm 92:1

Tonight we were treated to a piano "concert" by our niece who is staying with my in-laws for the weekend. They came over for a cookout and while I was getting things done in the kitchen she sat down to play. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the first piece she played was one I played in a recital when I was about the same age she is now. That made me smile. She played through several other classical pieces then started sight reading one of my favorite arrangements of "Be Thou My Vision'. Love, love, love! And then "As the Deer"...another favorite! Classics are great...hymns, though, are the best!

There is just something wonderful about live music drifting through the house, especially when mingled with the aromas of a good meal being cooked and the sound of family conversations.

It was a feast for the senses, all the way around.

Carry

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
Galatians 6:2

I stumbled upon this story today. As a baseball mom it really touched my heart.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/28/softball-players-carry-opponent_n_5228442.html?utm_hp_ref=good-news&ir=Good%20News

What awesome young women they are! They truly understand the heart of the game. They could have let her own teammates send in a runner. They could have just stood there and watched.

But they acted instead.

What a great example they have given...a memory they will carry with themselves forever.

A lesson we can all carry.

Woop!!!

"Shout for joy to God, all the earth!"    Psalm 66:1

I was #9 in line at the DMV this morning! I took knitting with me and only got about four rows done before it was my turn. Quick in, quick out! That was the hand of God at work...I didn't get there until 9:30!

Best of all, we finally got my husband's car back!!!! It's been seven long months. SEVEN LOOOOOONNNGGGG MONTHS waiting on a new wiring harness so it could be repaired from where it caught on fire last year (from faulty wiring)... @_@  Another unfortunate chapter closed! Hallelujah!!

Today was AWESOME!!!

Great Peace

"Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble."
Psalm 119:165

Admittedly I had to work on the stumble part this morning. I had reached the edge of a steep cliff of frustration with a long saga revolving around one of our cars, and boy did I have to pray my way through to keep my steps where they need to be! Thankfully I have found that the closer you walk with God the quicker you receive the Grace needed to get through trying situations. Grace is like a guard rail...and just what I needed at the edge of that cliff, because part of me really wanted to give the car dealership a choice piece of my mind.

But....... I've also learned that keeping my peace is way more valuable than giving into frustrations, even really big ones. I'll take great peace over stumbling anytime.

It sure turned what could have been a bad day into a good one today.   :)

April 29, 2014

Rest

"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord , make me dwell in safety."
Psalm 4:8

Today I took a nap.

That's not a big deal to a lot of people but it's something I rarely ever get to do. Usually I just push through...I'm not the type that "slacks off". There's always more to do.

But today that bit of sleep was necessary. I'll blame it on the pollen. :) It was a busy day and by late afternoon I was toast.

I'm grateful that I could take that time out between work and family responsibilities to get refreshed. What needed to get done got done and there will be more to do tomorrow.

I trust in God's provision. And in Him I find peaceful, perfect rest.

A Good Man

"a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,"
Ecclesiastes 3:4

And today was a day for all of that.

It would have been my dad's 89th birthday today. I don't know why I felt that loss so keenly this year...maybe the date just snuck up on me. He's been gone for nine years. For a moment this morning I wept.  But I thought about his dry sense of humor and how good he was - at anything he set his mind to, and to people - and it made me smile. I'm grateful for the memories I have and for all the things he taught me.  Those things made it a good day.

He was a good man.

Waiting for the Harvest

"When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things."   Psalm 104:28

After church and lunch today we finished the rest of the garden. I am so excited about the garden this year! There is something about digging in the earth that is wonderfully satisfying. In the weeks to come we will water and pull weeds, keeping watch as things begin to grow. The whole process teaches many lessons - patience, the value of working together as a family, trusting God for the harvest.

Isn't that what's at the heart of faith? We do our part, wait patiently, and trust God for the harvest.

I can't wait to see what He does!

Planting

(He makes) plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth.
Psalm 104:14b

Today we planted. Well, first we went to Lowe's, Meyers Greenhouse, and Tractor Supply, and then we planted! It was a family effort...by day's end about 60% of the garden was in.

This year we expanded the garden space, and we're trying a few new things like spaghetti squash and butternut squash. I'm really looking forward to seeing how things turn out!

I'm tired and sore...and happy. :)

Gifts

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."   1 Peter 4:10

What a day full of wonderful surprises! I met a friend for coffee early this morning and she bought mine for me. That was an unexpected gift...and anyone who knows me knows I love coffee! What a nice way to start the day. Then a long time client (like 24 yrs!) offered me 4 tickets to a Winston-Salem Dash baseball game...and anyone who knows me knows we're a baseball family! That was an unexpected gift too! Then my youngest offered to cook dinner...he made pasta Alfredo - from scratch! Another unexpected gift! It was delicious. He's quite the chef and he's only 14.

Good things that came in three...after the day I had yesterday they were like hugs from God. I needed that.

It wasn't just a day of receiving unexpected gifts. On Tuesday I sent two of my Pay It Forward pet portraits in the mail, with an expected delivery of today or tomorrow. I can't wait to hear how they like them! PIF was something I started doing last year. I love the idea of sharing a gift of artwork at an unexpected time throughout the year! Last year I did fiber art, this year it's pet portrait pencil sketches.

God gives us gifts to receive and gifts to share. It was good today to experience both.

Pure Joy

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,"
James 1:2

So, then....it was a day of pure joy. Lots and lots of joy by that definition.

But at the end of the day, at a baseball game, I got to watch a sweet little toddler playing and giggling around and with me and that made all the day's frustrations just melt away.

Truly it is the simplest things in life that bring the fullest measure of joy. :)

Designer

"He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers."  Exodus 35:35

Today a good bit of my time was spent working on a lighting plan and making preliminary selections for fixtures for one of the coolest interior design projects of my career. I've been selected to do the interiors for the restoration of a 1909 Neoclassic beauty. Originally a stately home, over the years it's been converted to commercial property, and in recent years it has been empty.

Not your everyday project!

I'm loving the challenge of finding just the right things to bring it back to life. There are so many beautiful details in this place - leaded windows, a grand staircase, inlaid wood floors. Imagine the life of its original owners, the formal parties they must have had! If walls could talk... I just love the history such places hold!

And boy do I ever feel blessed to have been the designer chosen for this one!

A Full Day

"...when you lie down your sleep will be sweet."   Proverbs 3:24b

It was a good day all around. I met a work deadline, got the green light to proceed on a new project, met a friend at a place new to me that was really cool (I'll be going back there again!), had a good visit with her, helped my youngest make dinner - he loves to cook! - and after dinner got a good head start on more of my to-do list for tomorrow.

It was a full, busy day. But good all day. The kind of day that at its end leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment and contentment. Even though as I write this it's nearly midnight, I'm filled with peace. And my soon to be sleep will indeed be sweet.

Walking

"Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways."
Proverbs 4:26

Today was a busy day, but I got a phone call from a friend asking me to go walking this morning so I took time out to do just that. We met up at one of the town parks. It's a hilly hike and I only made two loops before I got winded. Made it a bit over a mile. Did I mention the hilly part? :)

Still, it was a beautiful, sunny morning with just enough chill in the air to wake us up. The park trail winds through the woods which are full of blooming dogwood and cherry trees and the first hints of green. So pretty! We grabbed a cup of coffee afterwards before I headed back to the tasks of the day. It was fun...it felt good.

Walking was on my agenda today, so it worked out well. It's something I need to do more consistently...I need to work on being steadfast in my efforts.

That little time out was good for thinking through the rest of the day. And in spite of a jam-packed schedule, everything got done.

Life is indeed good.

Easter

"The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay."  Matthew 28:5-6

He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!!

Today, Easter, was all good. Beautiful church service, a special lunch with extended family, a relaxing evening at home. Blessings that fill me up and for which I am thankful.

Waiting

"I wait for the Lord , my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope."
Psalm 130:5

Today was a day of filling time...errand running, sewing, hanging out with family.

Waiting....

Easter is almost here!

Good Friday

"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."  John 1:29b

Before the Third Cross

Before the third cross, there
were tears that stained the
ground...drops of sweat as
blood falling...the harsh, cutting
lashes of a Roman whip.
Before the third cross there
was a plea for release, yet a yielding
to what must be.

Before the third cross He knew
my name.

Before the third cross He knew
yours too.

He carried it anyway.

Maundy Thursday

"While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."  Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.  This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.  I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."   Matthew 26:26-29

There were lots of good things about today. But the remembrance of this is what's most important.

Grace, poured out. For us all.

Change in Plans

"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."  Proverbs 19:21

Today I had a big presentation scheduled. My client called late morning and long story short they had an internal miscommunication and not everyone who needed to be present could be. So, we are rescheduling. And that meant I had the rest of the day free to catch up on some other projects!

I had been feeling a little stressed with everything I'm juggling, but the change in plans gave me just enough time to get several other things off my list and deliver drawings early to another client. Enough time to go grocery shopping and make a special dinner to celebrate two honor roll report cards that came home with the boys today. Enough time to catch my breath.

Sometimes Plan A doesn't work out. So you go to Plan B. Sometimes C and D if necessary. Sometimes you have to buy a vowel, so to speak. Plan E.

And sometimes a change in plans is a wonderful gift. :)

Who's the Boss

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters"  Colossians 3:23

Great news!! Today I got two more new design clients! It's been amazingly steady lately and I am so grateful. After the last few years of economic downturn, seeing  an upturn in activity is such a huge blessing! I've been self-employed for 24 years, freelancing for the last 14 since my youngest was born. It's not always been easy but over and over I've been awed by God's provisions. He's been faithful to give me what I need, be that work to do or a break when I need it...even forgiveness when I got weary enough to complain and forget Who's in charge. He's given me grace to be open to the lessons I needed to learn.

I might be self employed, but I'm not the boss.

He is.

Things work so much better that way.

Dinner Date

"Do everything in love."  1 Corinthians 16:14

I got to have a dinner date with my youngest tonight, just us. It's cool that my kids still like hanging out with me  :)

I know these days are fleeting...I wouldn't trade them for the world.

To Each His Own

Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."   Matthew 22:21b

I had hoped to get our taxes done before Holy Week...not the thing I want to be focused on! But, I finished them up this afternoon and they are submitted. Thank you Turbo Tax! Hopefully I got it right. At least they are done and I don't have to think about it anymore.

It was Cantata day at church today. The choir and narrators did a beautiful job. Palm branches were waved and Hosannas rang out! Glory to God in the highest, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Today I gave to "Caesar" what is his, and to God what is His. To each his own.

(Giving to God is the best part! )

Getting Ready

"For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations."  Isaiah 61:11

Today was get the garden ready day! We cleaned out, tilled up, added new soil, tilled in, and raked smooth. We pulled weeds, lay bricks to line a pathway, spread mulch. There is still work to do but we got a lot done! After a day of hard work the beds are ready to plant. I will be sore tomorrow I'm sure, but the first day of gardening always makes me happy. It means good things are coming!

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. The weeks of Lent leading up to this have also been a time of getting ready. And tomorrow praises will spring up as we remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.

We're getting ready for Easter!

Getting to Hope

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."  Romans 5:3-5

I had to go to the DMV License Plate Agency today.

Land of the mile long line and multi-hour wait.

Yuk.

But, the weather was beautiful - yes the line was way out the door - and the people in line around me were really nice. So it turned out to be good! The time passed quickly enough.

I had to turn the tags in on my husband's car because it's due for inspection which can't be done because it's still at the dealership awaiting a wiring harness to replace the one that caught the car on fire last September.

Yes, last September. 09-2013.

Evidently wiring harnesses are hard to come by.

Yes we've suffered. It's hard to be without a car. We're at the "running" stage of parenthood. But we've persevered. I've learned  to take the reality in front of me and make do, making the best of the circumstances I've got. I've been frustrated, but I'm trying to keep a right attitude that reflects good character.

And I hope it will resolve soon!!

That's where I am...getting to hope. And I have every confidence that God will work it all out.

He always does.

Laughter

"He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy."  Job 8:21

My family had me laughing so hard at dinner tonight I almost had a pea go up my nose. I was laughing so hard I was crying. About couldn't breathe and my sides hurt.

It was awesome! :D

Laughter...it's good for the soul.

Growing

"The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with their seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good."  Genesis 1:12

Today was a run from one thing to the next kind of day and truthfully it had a few too many frustrations. Frustrations are stumbling blocks meant to distract us from seeing the good things God puts around us, and it's easy to be sidetracked by them. On days like that I have to be even more purposeful in keeping watch for what was good!

On the way home between two meetings today I noticed that both of my apple trees have started putting out leaves. I'm so excited about that! They are still twiggy babies, just planted last year. I know it will be several seasons before they bear fruit, but seeing the signs of life returning to them made me very happy.

They are growing. So am I. :)

The Joy of Children

"Children are a heritage from the Lord"  Psalm 127:3a

It was another day full of good things but the best of all was that today marked the first anniversary of adoption - or Gotcha Day - for a friend of mine. One year ago today she became Mommy to a beautiful little boy, adopted from China. She waited a long time to be a mom...I know what that feels like, even though our circumstances were different. The longing and waiting and not knowing if it will ever be is hard whether it's a biological child or an adopted one.

She posted two pictures today. One was a scared little boy from a year ago, unsure of what was happening in his world. The other was the same little guy today, bright eyes and a face full of joy!

My heart melted. It does every time I see that smile.

The joy of children...what's good about every day.   :)

Rainy Monday

"I will send you rain in its seasons, and the ground will yield it's crops and the trees their fruit."  Leviticus 26:4

It was a rainy Monday...soggy, gray, and now foggy. It was the first day back to school and routines after a really nice break. A recipe for gloom...or at least grumbling.

But it was a really good day! I enjoyed walking in it without an umbrella. If it's not a cold rain I think that's fun. :) I got a good report at my doctor's office, got lots of work done, and best of all....

The rain washed all the heavy pollen away! What can I say...it's allergy season. I'll rejoice at any form of relief.

There has been a good amount of rain over the last several months. The lakes in the neighborhood are the fullest they've been in a while. After some drought years that's a welcome sight! And it will soon be time to plant the garden. Having rain-washed soil will be much easier to till. I'm looking forward to the good things that will be harvested this year!

Rainy Monday? Didn't get me down...
